The Baron Haussmann sofa that is an example of the classical décor of nineteenth-century Parisian apartments on the Boulevard Haussmann. Baron Haussmann, prefect of the Seine administrative department until 1870, undertook large-scale construction work that greatly modified the face of the capital. The emperor Napoléon III wanted Paris to become as prestigious as his power.
This project gave birth to a great many apartment buildings so characteristic of Paris and its architecture.
On the sides of the sofa, drawings from classical interiors of Haussmannian buildings, with details of the period’s door, wall and ceiling moldings. The furniture remains timeless and of good taste today. These illustrations reflect the French art of fine living. The legs on which the sofa rests were worked after the original legs of an eighteenth century piece of furniture, chased in the Louis XV style and executed by a master bronze-founder, stamped with his initials and gilded in 24-carat gold.
